Lovely Lake Geneva

September, 2010

Mike and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary in Lake Geneva, WI, in September of 2010. It’s a beautiful town! Mums and pumpkins lined the street corners, making it impossible not to get excited about the coming days of Autumn. We rented bikes and went riding along a graveled path which led us to small towns. The vibrant blue September sky above the rolling hills was spectacular, like a scene from a Disney movie. I actually thought Shrek and Donkey might appear over the hill at any moment!  We browsed through the many artists’ shops and walked along the lakefront, marveling at the gorgeous boats which were docked there. We found a restaurant with over-sized windows by the lake. The food wasn’t much to write home about, but the view was breathtaking. The weather was warm and mild on our first day, but the temperature dropped quite a bit, thereafter. Still, we braved the colder climate and climbed aboard a boat to tour the many mansions built around the lake. I also loved seeing some of the extremely old, stone churches. We must have spent two hours in a store called I Love Funky’s. It’s a two-story building, filled with unique gift items and unusual antiques once owned by the wealthy families who moved to Lake Geneva from Chicago while they rebuilt their homes following the Great Chicago fire. Once their homes were rebuilt, many of them continued to spend their summers in Lake Geneva. Judging by some of the items for sale at Funky’s, a few of them obviously had more money than sense! I don’t where one puts a carousel or an extremely large doll house in their home, but it was fun to see a glimpse of some of these extremely eccentric and expensive treasures!
